I shined a light into my eye and realized I had flecks of gold

I recognized the navy rim, the gray-blue sea around the core

But when I saw the flecks of gold

That was something I had never seen before

I shined a light onto my hand and realized I had bones of steel

I recognized the ruined skin, the silver scars, joints knotted, sore

But when I saw the bones of steel

That was something I had never seen before

I shined a light into my head and realized I had fighting will

I recognized the panicked mire, the wants and fears at anxious war

But when I saw the fighting will

That was something I had never seen before

I shined a light into my heart and realized I had freedom there

I recognized the not-enough, the push and pull of being more

But when I saw the freedom there

That was something I had never seen before
